DARK FAIRYTALES (EXIST)
[WORK IN PROGRESS]
artist statement
Dark Fairytales (Exist) is my long-form art practice and visual autobiography. It is an ongoing world-building practice developed through sculptural objects and small-scale environments. The work explores light, color, and architecture as tools for constructing imagined spaces that sit between the domestic and the speculative. The work draws on magical realism, intentionally blurring fantasy and reality as a way of mapping identity, memory, and self-perception.
At the center of the practice is Brutalist Fantasy, a visual and material design system combining acrylic, cement, and illumination. It is built around a set of primary neons — Acid Green, Electric Pink, Sapphire Blue, Solar Orange, and Cement Grey. These colors function as a structural language, chosen for their intensity, legibility, and ability to hold space when activated by light. The palette establishes a shared logic across objects and environments, allowing color to behave architecturally.
Each piece is conceived as a fragment of a larger imagined world. Houses, arches, portraits, and symbols appear as thresholds — places that suggest entry, protection, or transformation. Together, the works form a slowly assembled self-portrait, built through iterative making and material experimentation.
While the world continues to expand, the objects presented here stand independently, reflecting a practice rooted in process, imagination, and the physical act of building - with the intention to scale into architectural installations and immersive environments where light acts as material, shaping space and perception.
